Rebuilding a quinquereme to test its rowing arrangement

A working quinquereme would test competing rowing arrangements, while variation between yards and design traditions limits what one reconstruction could establish.

Notes

A historically constructed quinquereme is proposed as a way to test disputed positions of rowers and oars. The argument is that repeated debate over the arrangement takes time away from studying battles and naval logistics. A working vessel would let competing ideas face the physical demands of rowing. A later exchange points out that different yards or Roman and Carthaginian design traditions could still produce different configurations. The reconstruction could test feasibility without necessarily proving that every ancient quinquereme used the same arrangement.
