Why Scharnhorst's label mattered less than her operational fit

The panel moves beyond the battleship-versus-battlecruiser label to ask whether Scharnhorst's design suited the war Germany actually fought.

Notes

Churchill publicly called the ships battlecruisers while Admiralty descriptions had treated them as fast battleships, but the panel argues that the label is less important than what they could do. They were conceived around Baltic and possible French operations rather than a sustained contest with Britain. Their speed and armament made them dangerous, yet range and endurance limited Atlantic employment. More aircraft would also have improved their ability to scout without outside support. The design became inefficient as German political strategy moved far beyond the assumptions that had shaped it.
