HMS Dreadnought was useful even without fighting at Jutland

The answer separates lack of combat contact from lack of military use and explains the strategic trap awaiting a German move through the Channel.

Question

Was HMS Dreadnought actually used as a warship, or did she merely begin a new era?

Short answer

She served actively as a flagship in the Channel, but the German fleet avoided the theater she guarded, so she performed an important deterrent role without receiving a Jutland-style battle.

Notes

Dreadnought operated with the Channel force and covered a route of great importance to Britain. The High Seas Fleet might force its way into the Channel, but doing so would inflict damage and consume time while the Grand Fleet closed the exit behind it. A brief disruption would therefore risk the destruction of the German fleet on its return journey. The enemy's decision not to challenge that position made Dreadnought appear inactive even though her presence helped make the operation unattractive.
