How much better were officers' quarters and food in the Age of Sail?
Short answerTheir chief advantage was personal space; preserved food and drink were often much the same as the crew's, and purchased extras did not last long.
NotesOfficers could purchase additional provisions and spirits, but fresh extras did not last long with the preservation methods available. On an extended voyage they still relied heavily on durable staples such as salted beef and pork. Their most consistent advantage was access to more personal space rather than a fundamentally different diet. Even that distinction should not be confused with modern expectations of privacy, which developed under very different domestic and shipboard conditions.
