Urban electric vehicles and remote diesel-electric transport

Electric vehicles offer practical urban air-quality benefits, while diesel-electric lorries can better suit remote work where battery range becomes a constraint.

Notes

Electric transport can reduce the movement of fossil fuels and improve efficiency in parts of the transport system. Its strongest case here is in densely populated cities, where there are relatively few ways to improve local air quality and electric vehicles work well. Remote countryside creates different operating requirements. A lorry working far from support can run out of battery charge, making a diesel-electric arrangement a more practical use of electric drive for that task. Edison Motors is mentioned as a Canadian example of work on that approach.
