Why Britain accepted American control of Hawaii

Distance, existing British Pacific bases, and a preference to exclude rival powers made American Hawaii acceptable to Britain.

Question

How did the United States obtain Hawaii rather than Britain, and did Britain need it for a global imperial chain?

Short answer

Britain already had sufficient Pacific positions and preferred friendly American control to the cost of holding Hawaii or seeing Germany or Japan acquire it.

Notes

Britain did not need Hawaii to complete a chain of imperial possessions around the world. Australia, New Zealand, and other Pacific islands already supplied British positions, while supporting Hawaii directly would have been costly and inconvenient. London chiefly wanted to prevent Germany or Japan from acquiring the islands and creating a new strategic problem. American control was therefore a tolerable outcome even if Britain would not necessarily have rejected Hawaii had circumstances offered it cheaply.
