Which main-gun turret is usually safer on a warship: one forward or one aft?
Short answerNeither has a decisive safety advantage: aft turrets may be slightly more exposed to incoming fire, while forward positions can be far more punishing in heavy seas.
NotesNo simple safe-side rule applies. Aft positions may be more exposed to shells aimed ahead of a moving target, while a forward turret can subject its crew to much worse motion and spray when firing in rough seas. The practical difference is small beside the wider hazards of combat.
