Chapter · 2:36:35-2:39:02

Corbett develops a British maritime strategy

A separate theory chapter connects Corbett's limited-war thinking to Edwardian politics, civilian government, historical research, and a distinctly British maritime strategy.

Notes

Julian Corbett developed a national strategy suited to the political structure of Edwardian Britain. Clausewitz's distinction between limited and absolute war helped him connect naval operations to political purpose, liberal democracy, and civilian control. His work drew on historical research and contemporary debate rather than replacing Alfred Thayer Mahan with another universal naval formula. The modest sales of Some Principles of Maritime Strategy also show that later influence should not be mistaken for immediate popularity.
