Sir Henry Brownrigg retired in 1939 and organized the Home Guard at Chatham. He then nominated himself for service as a convoy commodore rather than merely administering other commodores. The ship carrying him with ON 16 was lost with all hands in January 1943. His death makes clear why convoy work should be understood as a dangerous use of senior experience, not a comfortable post outside the war.
