A reconnaissance cruiser is valuable enough to attract capital-ship fire but too lightly protected to trade blows with a battleship. The Brooklyns answer that dilemma with four floatplanes, twin catapults, and a stern arranged around aviation support. Their fifteen 6-inch guns could throw out a rapid volume of fire to damage a pursuer's directors, turrets, and upper works. Smoke, speed, and suppressive gunfire were therefore parts of one survival method: find the enemy, report it, and escape before heavier units could close.
