What use did Britain make of LVT amphibious tractors during World War II?
Short answerBritain used some, but not extensively; their limited role helped prevent the capability from becoming central to the postwar Royal Marines.
NotesBritain obtained some tracked amphibious vehicles but did not use them as extensively as forces fighting across Pacific reefs. In Europe, LCMs could carry tanks ashore while duplex-drive tanks and Hobart's Funnies supplied other ways to cross the beach, reducing the need for LVTs. After the war, Royal Marines armoured units disappeared and the force concentrated on light commando infantry. More wartime experience with LVTs might, in this interpretation, have preserved an organic armoured mobility capability.
