British tank portfolio and procurement resilience

Britain's many parallel tank families illustrate how mass and a diversified program portfolio can limit the consequences of one design choice.

Notes

Britain was never wholly committed to the Matilda. It maintained parallel cruiser, infantry, light, and experimental designs, including the A13, Valentine, Churchill, Cromwell, Tetrarch, Excelsior, and Tortoise. That range kept the failure or obsolescence of one vehicle from determining the entire armoured force. Parallel design families can appear inefficient, yet they also reduce dependence on one platform and preserve alternatives when requirements change. In this argument, mass means having more vehicles and programs from which to choose.
