Sortie generation as Britain’s carrier advantage

Several experienced British carriers could generate repeated strikes, turning maintenance, air-group size, and operating practice into a decisive advantage over one ingenious German ship.

Notes

Repeated launches mattered more than the performance of one aircraft or mechanism. Two or three British carriers brought larger combined air groups and crews experienced in organising successive strikes. Graf Zeppelin’s sophisticated machinery might deliver a strong first strike, but salt water, ship motion, and maintenance demands reduced confidence in continued output. Carrier warfare depended on logistics and operating scale as much as on elegant equipment.
