The British concentration paired five battlecruisers with seven light cruisers, 37 destroyers, and four submarines. Hipper brought four large armored ships, four light cruisers, and 19 torpedo boats or destroyers. Even counting Blücher generously as a battlecruiser rather than a large armored cruiser, the German force was inferior in every major category. The Royal Navy held both the capital-ship weight and the light forces needed to press a close-range attack. Given those advantages, the intelligence-led ambush should have achieved more than the loss of one German ship.
