How ending wartime cooperation accelerated Britain's bomb

American postwar secrecy removed British scientists from the joint program and gave Britain both the expertise and incentive to build independently.

Notes

Britain entered the postwar period with its own nuclear research tradition through Tube Alloys and scientists who had worked inside the Manhattan Project. Truman's decision to end cooperation was understandable as an American policy choice, but it returned experienced personnel to a country now determined to produce its own weapon. That reduced American influence over British development rather than preventing it. Technological exclusion can accelerate an ally's drive for strategic autonomy.
