How a British monarch exercises informal power

Public attention, private weekly audiences, and institutional distance let the monarch influence government without directing it.

Question

How much power does the King or Queen of the United Kingdom have?

Short answer

Limited formal governing power but significant informal influence through public attention, confidential audiences, and the head-of-state role.

Notes

The monarch does not ordinarily govern, but public attention follows royal interest in a cause and can force ministers to respond. The sovereign also influences how Britain presents itself abroad. A weekly private audience gives the prime minister a confidential sounding board whose reactions do not enter party politics, much as an experienced and discreet listener can help a ship captain think through a problem. The armed forces swear loyalty to the monarch as head of state rather than to a particular prime minister. Parliament still creates and funds those forces, so neither side has unlimited control. The result is a deliberately balanced, uncodified constitutional arrangement rather than direct royal rule.
