Chapter ยท 57:23-58:07

Merchant shipping carries Britain's strategic supply load

Merchant shipping carried bulk supplies to Singapore, leaving naval auxiliaries for the contested stages beyond it.

Notes

Britain's merchant marine supplied the volume needed to move stores along the safer strategic route to Singapore. General-purpose tramp steamers carried many kinds of cargo, while refrigerated ships such as banana boats handled perishable supplies. Royal Navy auxiliaries and ships taken up from trade could then be reserved for the more exposed movement beyond the theatre-entry base. Civilian shipping capacity formed the deep logistical tail behind naval force projection.
