Home Guard defences included mined hills, armoured transport, and hidden resistance

Local defenders prepared explosive traps, adapted railways and vehicles, and planned resistance behind an invading army.

Notes

Some Home Guard units revived First World War mining methods by packing hills with explosives. The intended defence would contest the ground before withdrawing and detonating it beneath the occupying Germans. The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway operated a miniature armoured train and claimed an aircraft. Displayed First World War tanks were also put back into running order, and tractors were converted into armoured vehicles. The proposed stay-behind force would wait for the main German units to pass before attacking behind the advance. In this account, that work helped provide people and skills for the Special Operations Executive's later operations in occupied Europe.
