British intervention threatened Germany's hope of a short war

Ireland distracted the British government, but intervention would give France access to a much wider pool of resources.

Notes

British ministers were absorbed by the Irish crisis and initially treated continental threats as familiar background tensions. Germany expected some British delay and hoped to defeat France before intervention became effective. Belgian resistance complicated that calculation because Britain's guarantee to Belgium was another route into the war. The longer-term danger was that British participation gave France a reason to keep fighting. Britain could draw on worldwide commercial resources and naval power while restricting Germany's access to them.
