Why the Royal Navy delayed higher-pressure boilers

Construction urgency, standardization, and training needs explain why Britain deferred higher-pressure machinery despite knowing about American developments.

Notes

British designers were well informed about American higher-pressure boiler work through the transatlantic engineering network. The Royal Navy nevertheless needed ships sooner and favored standardized machinery that simplified construction and crew training. This made the delay a production-cycle choice rather than a failure to understand the technology. Had war arrived later, later cruisers and large destroyers probably would have adopted higher-pressure systems, and some existing cruisers might have been upgraded. The propulsion choice reflects mobilization timing, industrial capacity, and fleet-wide training costs.
