British gunboats answer the attack on USS Panay

The immediate British response to USS Panay demonstrates that the two Yangtze patrols already operated as practical partners during a dangerous regional crisis.

Notes

When Japanese aircraft sank USS Panay, two British gunboats were the first warships to reach the scene. There was no hesitation: an American gunboat was in danger, so nearby Royal Navy vessels moved in while Japanese operations continued in the area. The two patrols had an operational relationship stronger than neutral coexistence, with sailors treating the other patrol as a partner whose casualties and survival mattered. The response places the Panay Incident inside an established pattern of Anglo-American naval cooperation in China rather than presenting it as an isolated diplomatic shock.
