Howe's command bench and the flag-captain system

Seven British flag officers and experienced flag captains gave Howe reserves of authority and expertise that the French command structure could not match.

Notes

Howe's fleet included vice admirals, rear admirals, and captains with enough experience to replace casualties or control separate parts of the action. The video contrasts this bench with the three French rear admirals available to Villaret-Joyeuse. Admiral Alan Gardner's preference for running his own ship also illustrates why a flag captain mattered: the captain could manage the vessel while the admiral concentrated on the squadron. Andrew Snape Douglas's career and fatal wounds show that these staff relationships joined tactical command to the cultivation of future naval leaders.
