If the United States concentrates on China, should Britain focus only on the North Atlantic or also deploy carriers to the Far East?
Short answerBritain can do both by reinforcing Atlantic allies while using periodic carrier deployments to train and deter with Indo-Pacific partners.
NotesA simple division in which the United States handles the Pacific while Britain remains only in the North Atlantic would waste opportunities for alliance training. A British carrier deployment can gather American, Canadian, Australian, and Japanese forces for combined exercises. It brings different operating assumptions and another carrier command team into allied training. That contribution builds relationships and interoperability even when the ship is not assigned permanently to the region. Britain can still reinforce Atlantic partners while making periodic Indo-Pacific deployments instead of choosing one theatre absolutely. Alliance training and visible presence contribute to deterrence without assuming that war with China is inevitable.
