Should Britain add Canberra-class ships to create three carrier groups?
Short answerA better mix is three fleet carriers, three light carriers, and three dedicated LPDs, preserving both aviation and dock capacity.
NotesCanberra is useful, but it cannot fully substitute for either a Queen Elizabeth-class carrier or a dedicated dock ship. A fleet carrier brings aviation capacity that an LHD cannot simply reproduce. A Bulwark-style LPD preserves dock and amphibious functions that a carrier lacks. The preferred fleet has three Queen Elizabeths, three Invincible-like light carriers, and three dedicated LPDs. That mix is intended to assure at least two flight decks and two docks rather than making one compromise design cover every role.
