Britain would need forces able to find, slow, and fight long-range German surface groups across the Atlantic. The threat could accelerate Vanguard, alter the King George V design, or produce a comparable fast battleship earlier. Renown, Repulse, and Hood might also receive greater or earlier modernization because speed becomes essential to the hunt. German diesel development would therefore change British capital-ship planning as well as German shipbuilding.
