Britain was not alone, but carried the burden

Britain still had the Empire and sympathetic neutrals, yet most immediately usable forces and fighting responsibilities fell on Britain in 1940.

Notes

The familiar claim that Britain stood alone in 1940 can be taken too far. The British Empire remained in the war, while Greece and the United States were already sympathetic, proactive neutrals. Many friendly forces, however, were dispersed in small packets, positioned far from the immediate crisis, or unprepared for the work Britain needed done. Britain retained partners while shouldering the lion’s share of the fighting burden after France’s collapse.
