How Britain's personal union with Hanover ended

Different succession rules separated the British crown from Hanover under Queen Victoria, freeing Britain from a German territorial connection as unification conflicts approached.

Notes

Hanoverian troops connected to the British monarch were distinct from the Prussian forces Britain subsidized for continental wars. Britain's kings also ruled Hanover until Victoria's accession, when Hanover's different inheritance rules separated the crowns. Without that territorial connection, Britain could avoid one possible source of involvement in the approaching German unification conflicts. Heligoland remained a separate British possession until its later transfer by treaty.
