Chapter ยท 3:19-6:20

Bristol propulsion, range, and the cruiser mission

Coal and oil figures, turbine machinery, mixed armament, and 25-knot speed show how the Bristols supported scouting, commerce protection, and raider hunting.

Notes

The quoted fuel capacities conflict with the claimed 5,830-nautical-mile range. A combined coal-and-oil arrangement is therefore more likely than a capacity of only 750 tons of coal. Yarrow boilers and Parsons or Brown-Curtis turbines produced about 22,000 shaft horsepower and 25 knots. Protection remained concentrated in the armoured deck, conning tower, and gun shields rather than a side belt. Two 6-inch guns addressed larger surface threats, while the 4-inch weapons suited destroyers and smaller opponents. Together, the guns matched the cruiser's roles in fleet scouting, trade protection, and hunting raiders.
