Why MV Breconshire was not converted with her sisters

The rejection of the closely related Breconshire shows that conversion depended on a detailed survey of each hull rather than plans alone.

Notes

Even ships built as sisters could differ enough in their as-completed structure and condition to affect a major conversion. The Admiralty judged Breconshire serviceable as a merchant vessel but unsuitable internally for the LSI alterations applied to the three Glen ships. That rejection shows that designers could not rely on nominal class plans alone. Surveyors had to verify the as-built structure, stability, and internal arrangements of each hull before authorizing new weights and openings. The disappointment over losing a fourth potential landing ship also shows how valuable the Admiralty considered this specialized lift.
