Chapter · 23:37-25:40

Centurion, the Boxer Rebellion, and Jellicoe's resilience

As Centurion's captain and Seymour's chief of staff, Jellicoe was nearly killed during the Boxer Rebellion but recovered with his attention fixed on bringing the ship home.

Notes

After work on the Admiralty's Ordnance Committee, Jellicoe took command of HMS Centurion and also served as Vice Admiral Edward Seymour's chief of staff. That dual position placed him in the attempted relief operations during the Boxer Rebellion. Jellicoe was wounded so badly in a later action that the chaplain was summoned because doctors expected him to die. His response was to focus on recovering and preventing another captain from taking Centurion home. He succeeded and returned with the ship in August 1901, an episode that ties his resilience closely to professional responsibility.
