The Boxer Rebellion as a career opportunity

Command of Hansa during the Boxer Rebellion gave Pohl a chance to display competence, cultivate press attention, and secure promotion with Tirpitz's support.

Notes

Pohl used overseas service and participation around the Taku Forts to build the public reputation expected of an officer seeking full captain's rank. He did enough to justify a patron's backing without achieving the independent distinction that would compel promotion on merit alone. That difference helps explain his rapid rise and the surprise of his sponsors when he later pursued policy without them. The episode uses overseas command to show how Imperial German naval careers were cultivated.
