Why a cheaper vehicle can still cost more to introduce

The Boxer discussion compares vehicle prices with the factories, training and support needed to introduce a second fleet.

Notes

A cheaper wheeled vehicle must still justify the cost of production facilities, technical rights, training and a separate support system. In the illustrative comparison, roughly £800 million for introducing the alternative and £400 million for training and related needs would consume much of a claimed £2 billion saving. That leaves about £800 million, enough for 400 vehicles at an assumed £2 million each. A later order taking the fleet to about 1,200 could spread the setup costs enough to make the alternative attractive. Without that commitment, adding 400 Boxers is preferred because their production and support arrangements already exist. These are estimates within the argument, not verified programme costs, and the alternative vehicle name is unclear in the captions.
