Source claims and the myth of a gentle Boshin War

French adviser accounts require caution, and later depictions of the Boshin War as an unusually gentle conflict are misleading.

Notes

French military-adviser accounts of the Miyako Bay plan need careful handling. Advisers who claimed responsibility for successes while blaming Japanese officers for failures may have been promoting themselves instead of recording a reliable command history. Portrayals of the Boshin War as a comparatively friendly or restrained conflict also mislead. Comparison with the bloodier Satsuma Rebellion and other later violence can make Boshin fighting look mild, although the war itself was bitter. A reliable campaign narrative must separate events from the self-serving accounts and retrospective myths that shaped later interpretations.
