In 1789 Richard and Mary Johnson took an Aboriginal girl of about 15 into their home. Her name appears in the passage as Araboo or Boorong, and she had survived the smallpox outbreak. She learned English and Western customs, then returned to her own people and continued to visit the Johnsons. Whether she found the household welcoming remains an interpretation because her own words are not available here.
