Reading the history of British military infrastructure

The recommended reading is distributed across broader military and naval histories rather than concentrated in one definitive infrastructure volume.

Question

Is there a favourite book on British imperial military infrastructure?

Short answer

No single book covers it all; Jeremy Black and Nicholas Rogers provide useful sections and chapters within broader studies.

Notes

Jeremy Black's work on Britain as a military power and Nicholas Rogers's books contain useful chapters on infrastructure and investment. A broad history of British shipbuilding from 1500 to 2010 is another useful partial reference. Most books cover only one portion of the subject. The imperial dockyard story therefore has to be assembled from military, economic, and shipbuilding histories rather than one definitive survey.
