Why bomber fuel pipelines made air power less mobile

Britain's bomber bases needed pipelines because truck delivery would overload the road network, but the same infrastructure made squadrons difficult to rebase.

Notes

British strategic bomber bases depended on dedicated aviation-fuel pipelines. Supplying the same volume by truck would have strained or collapsed the road network. Rail delivery would have required extensive new track and terminal capacity. Pipelines solved the daily throughput problem while tying air power to prepared bases that could not be reproduced quickly elsewhere.
