Bodiam and Beaumaris are both enclosure castles without a keep, but their plans serve different priorities. Edward I's strongholds at Caernarfon, Conwy, and Harlech were weapons of conquest whose walls followed defensible rock platforms. Their halls and chambers had to fit irregular military outlines, including Conwy's curved great hall. Bodiam starts with a regular courtyard, well-proportioned hall, chapel, and chambers, then wraps the enclosing walls around the household plan.
