Bodiam's moat, ponds, and landscape of display

The castle's intimidating silhouette formed part of a carefully planned landscape intended to magnify status and drama.

Notes

Bodiam's gatehouse, sheer walls, turrets, chimneys, and reflected image made the building look more formidable than its thin defenses suggest. Its tall surfaces and small battlement details exaggerate the apparent height and menace of the silhouette. Topographical evidence for vanished gardens and ponds shows that the moat belonged to a larger designed landscape. The water features were arranged to heighten the castle's visual effect on approaching visitors, making display an integral part of the site's architecture.
