The 1st Battalion, 1st Marines suffered a reported 71 percent casualty rate while attacking Hill 100. Captain Everett Pope led about 90 men toward what they thought was the crest, only to find another Japanese-held ridge beyond it. After running out of ammunition, the Marines fought with knives, fists, coral rocks, and empty ammunition boxes. They evacuated the position the next day. Pope received the Medal of Honor.
