Blockade service as a school of experience

Long periods at sea gave British crews time for gunnery, sailing practice, maintenance, and the spread of experience.

Notes

A fleet that stayed at sea gained more than a position off an enemy port. Routine drills, cleaning, maintenance, promotions, and movement of sailors between ships gradually raised proficiency across the force. Keeping most of the Royal Navy deployed also created more opportunities for action and spread experienced personnel as assignments changed. Sea time could produce capable crews before their first battle, though combat experience remained distinct.
