Blanco Encalada retained institutional value throughout her career. Her War of the Pacific service made her a national naval symbol, while years in commission gave Chilean officers and sailors a continuing training base. In 1891 she carried congressional leaders away from Valparaíso so they could organize resistance in the north. Her sinking removed an armoured frigate and a platform around which the navy had trained, remembered an earlier victory, and mobilized during a constitutional crisis.
