Hull proportions for coastal manoeuvre

Blanco Encalada’s relatively short, broad hull traded the speed advantages of a fine hull for tighter turning near Chile’s difficult coastline.

Notes

Blanco Encalada’s length-to-beam ratio was much lower than that of the longer HMS Warrior. A long, narrow hull reduces resistance and favors speed, but it also gives the water more hull length to resist during a turn. Blanco Encalada’s shorter, broader proportions favored manoeuvrability and a smaller turning circle. That choice suited operations close to shore, difficult coastal geography, and the need to bring central-battery guns onto a target.
