Unlike the torpedo-carrying Dart, the R.1 did not need the Dart's undercarriage arrangement. It used conventional wheel-and-axle gear, strengthened centrally and braced with extra struts for deck landings at a high rate of descent. Claws engaged the fore-and-aft arresting wires used at the time. The landing gear therefore had to meet both the structural demands of carrier operations and the requirements of the contemporary arresting system.
