Black Prince supported the 10th Destroyer Flotilla during operations around the Bay of Biscay and the approaches to Normandy. Much of her work involved star shell and battlefield illumination, but her 5.25-inch battery also provided a nearby reserve if German forces threatened to overpower the destroyers. Her hull could absorb the recoil and sustain a heavier, longer-reaching battery than the flotilla's destroyers. She reinforced the flotilla without duplicating its existing weapons.
