Bittern design linked peacetime needs to wartime escorts

The Bittern class used yacht and survey requirements to produce a long-range hull that could be armed quickly for war.

Notes

The 1,190-ton Bittern design became an ancestor of later sloops, Hunt-class destroyers, Flower-class corvettes, and River-class frigates. Henderson used the Admiralty's need for a long-range yacht to justify a class rather than one specialized hull, with the first ship renamed HMS Enchantress for that duty. HMS Stork entered service as a treaty-exempt survey ship. She returned from the China Station in 1939 and received her wartime armament before September. Peacetime yacht and survey requirements thus created reserve escort capacity that could be activated quickly.
