HMS Bittern operated with Tribal-class destroyers in support of troops ashore during the Namsos campaign. Her small size let her work close to the amphibious operation, extending the utility of a ship designed for escort and presence. The same compact hull offered little margin when the Luftwaffe attacked, and she was sunk after taking heavy damage. Her service at Namsos carried the interwar sloop program into wartime joint operations, while her loss exposed the survivability cost of fitting useful capability into roughly a thousand tons.
