Chapter ยท 1:02-6:48

Bismarck's alliance system and its unravelling

The opening background traces how the Dual and Triple Alliances, then the lapsed Reinsurance Treaty, reshaped European diplomatic calculations.

Notes

Bismarck's arrangements formed a deliberately layered system rather than a simple pair of hostile blocs. The Dual Alliance expanded into the Triple Alliance, but its defensive wording later gave Italy and Romania grounds to reject Germany and Austria-Hungary's 1914 war as offensive. Letting the Reinsurance Treaty lapse removed a source of confidence with Russia and helped make a Franco-Russian rapprochement more likely. Alliance structures could therefore turn on legal wording and policy choices that seemed minor at the time.
