Why does the Bismarck class appear inefficient compared with contemporary battleships?
Short answerGermany had less recent experience designing and sustaining modern capital ships, so an ambitious Bismarck design carried more uncertainty than British or American counterparts built on longer practice.
NotesGerman designers were not drawing on the same recent capital-ship experience as their British and American counterparts. Britain and the United States had continued building, modernizing, operating, and maintaining battleships, so their late-1930s designs did not begin from zero. Scharnhorst took a more conservative path and came closer to a workable result. Bismarck attempted a much more ambitious battleship with less accumulated design, operational, and maintenance knowledge behind it. The same concern appears in the Deutschland class, where six 11-inch guns may have used displacement less efficiently than a larger battery of 8-inch weapons.
