Raeder's commerce-raiding strategy and its compromises

Big Guns in the Atlantic traces how Versailles, diesel propulsion, and German industrial limits shaped the Deutschland-class commerce raiders.

Notes

Raeder sought long-ranged ships that could operate with tankers and disrupt British trade without overseas bases. Refueling at sea and supply ships were meant to replace the overseas coaling network that constrained earlier raiders. The Deutschland design answered that need with diesel endurance and 11-inch guns, but its 26-knot speed left it vulnerable to being caught. It was an ingenious response to constraints that remained closer to a heavy cruiser than an ideal independent raider.
