Why damaged German battlecruisers could end the chase

Reliable British shells could cripple Lützow, Seydlitz, and Derfflinger early enough to make Scheer abandon the chase rather than press toward the Grand Fleet.

Notes

The central battlefield claim is behavioural as well as material: German commanders were seeking a favourable local fight, not an exchange that rapidly destroyed capital ships. Improved ammunition would likely go first to the Battlecruiser Force and Fifth Battle Squadron, making the run north much more dangerous for Hipper's ships. Loss of several battlecruisers and possibly Hipper would reverse the psychology of the chase just as Scheer confronts evidence that British battleships are already present. The likely result, in this interpretation, is a withdrawal resembling an enlarged Dogger Bank rather than the historical course of Jutland.
